With the upcoming holiday season now just weeks away, community support is needed in Greater Saint John.
The Salvation Army and Community Christmas Exchange are working to ensure no child goes without a toy.
Lt. Jason Brinson with The Salvation Army said they are seeing an even greater demand for the assistance program.
“We’re going to have over 2,000 children requiring a toy this year so we really need people to assist us,” Brinson told our newsroom.
“People just want to see joy at Christmas time, and one of the things that brings children joy in particular is having something to open on Christmas day.”
This year, the organizations are collecting unwrapped toys and gifts for children between the ages of birth and 13 years old.
Brinson said they are also encouraging local businesses to hold office toy drives or set up collection boxes for customers to donate gifts.
“We couldn’t do this without the generous donors throughout the years and we’re confident that will be the same this year,” he said.
You can also make a financial donation instead and the organizations will purchase gifts for age groups where they may see a need.
Brinson said once they have received all of the toys, they set up a “toy shop” where caregivers can come in and choose gifts for the children, similar to what they would do in a store.
“It adds to the experience to the person who’s reaching out. They know the toy that the person is going to get because it’s unwrapped,” he said.
Donations are being accepted until Dec. 13 at The Salvation Army on Waterloo Street between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays or at any fire station in the city.
