Port Saint John, with the City of Saint John, celebrated the official launch of Long Wharf Landing on Thursday.
Long Wharf Landing features an extra 840 feet of walking trail, landscaping, and public facilities that create a vibrant spot for both residents and tourists to enjoy, while also serving as a hub for essential marine activities.
Craig Bell Estabrooks, president and CEO of the port, referred to the landing as a beneficial upgrade to the Harbour Passage network.
“When we look at our infrastructure projects for the next five years, we’re looking at what are those public elements, how can we bring people closer to the waterfront, have better transitions, and the thing that’s near and dear to me, how can it look better,” said Bell Estabrooks.
Completed in 2022 as a component of the West Side Modernization Project, the breakwater is the main attraction at the site, safeguarding support vessels from the challenging conditions of the harbour.
Mayor Donna Reardon, who visited Copenhagen, Denmark, for a workshop on healthy urban policy, also highlighted the landing as a lively spot for locals and visitors.
“To have a bike place or a bike park that you have to drive to is counterintuitive, so you gotta look at your assets and try and connect your assets,” explained Reardon.
