Saint John wants to reduce speeds in the area of Sandy Point Road and Foster Thurston Drive.
It comes as a new daycare is scheduled to open at the former site of the Cherry Brook Zoo this fall.
A modern roundabout is scheduled to be installed at the intersection in 2025, pending approval.
But city staff are looking at other temporary traffic calming measures through the area in the meantime.
They have asked council for permission to lower the speed limit to 40 kilometres per hour from 50 kilometres per hour.
Council approved the first and second readings of the bylaw change last week. It is expected to come to council for final approval next week.
That is in addition to other interim measures such as using traffic paint to narrow the travel lanes on the north Foster Thurston and south Sandy Point intersection legs.
Staff also plan to install centre temporary bollards and reinforce the posted speed limit with enhanced centre-of-street signage.
Rumble strips and speed feedback signs were installed on the north Foster Thurston and south Sandy Point Road approaches to this intersection in 2021.
City staff said average speeds have since been reduced to 54 kilometres per hour from 58 kilometres per hour.
