Another milestone for the Veterans Peace Park revitalization project in Grand Bay-Westfield.
Five new memorial monuments are set to be unveiled at the park on Saturday afternoon.
Cory Ryan, 1st vice-president of the Royal Canadian Legion Bayview Branch 22, said the monuments will include around 160 names.
“The monuments are World War I, World War II, the centre one is those who served, the next one is Korea and Afghanistan, and the last one is going to be dedicated to peacekeepers,” Ryan said in an interview.
“All these names are from Veterans that live in the area or have lived in the area or have family that are in the area now.”
Work to revitalize the Veterans Peace Park, located at the intersection of Woolastook Drive and River Valley Drive, has been ongoing for a couple of years.
Ryan said they wanted to refresh the space to recognize current and future Veterans and to make it a centre of piece and tranquility.
“We see it as a living and growing history of our military heritage in the area,” he added.
Other work already completed includes the installation of additional flag poles and LED lighting, as well as new benches and a new peace monument.
Ryan said the next phase of work will include a retaining wall, flowers and shrubbery.
The monument unveiling ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. Saturday.
