Another New Brunswicker is heading to Paris to take part in the Summer Olympics.
Chris Belof, a track and field coach at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), will join Team Canada as an event coach.
Belof’s coaching experience ranges from being an assistant coach for Canada’s Pan Am Cross Country team in 2018 to serving as the head coach of Canada’s half-marathon team in 2020 and 2021.
He also worked as an event coach for Athletics Canada at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships, however, he says the Olympics are the pinnacle of athletics and hopes to see New Brunswickers in future international games,
“I’m looking forward to the experience and the challenges and the growing outside of it, so yeah, it’ll be good,” says Belof.
“Working in the right event and working with the right coach can mean the world in your development, and if you can find that, ultimately, you need to couple your athleticism with a certain amount of drive.”
Belof will work with race walkers and marathoners while also supporting endurance coaches and athletes.
There are 50 track and field athletes among the 320 Canadians competing in 31 sports from July 26 to August 11.
Belof is in his seventh season as the head coach for UNB RED’s cross-country and track & field teams. He also works as a high-performance coach for Athletics New Brunswick and a club coach for the Saint John Track & Field Club.
