In his own words, local artist Ken Robichaud became enamoured with Lego when they introduced Star Wars build sets in 1999.
However, it wasn’t until 2012 when Lego partnered with Marvel Avengers that he decided to build himself a wearable Captain America Shield.
Now he’s showing more than 10 years of his Lego-designed work at the Saint John Arts Centre for its first Pop Culture Cubed Exhibition.
The overall goal, said Robichaud, is to show Lego as a legitimate medium for contemporary art.
“There are artists in smaller venues all over that are doing the same thing that aren’t getting any recognition, and it would be nice to show that it’s not just for huge cities and huge venues,” said Robichaud.
This series of creations takes inspiration from various mediums across the spectrum of popular culture, from movies, TV, and art.
The signature piece is a five-foot-tall representation of The Dark Tower from the Stephen King novel series of the same name.
Robichaud’s wife, Alicia, is a multimedia artist who has also provided supporting acrylic paintings to highlight Ken’s sculptures.
The exhibition will be open until August 30.
