Work on a west Saint John railroad crossing could lead to some delays over the next couple of weeks.
NBM Railways and the City of Saint John are working on the railroad crossing on Sherbrooke Street.
The sidewalk will be closed until July 16 and there will be periodic lane closures on Sherbrooke Street and Montreal Avenue.
“This closure is necessary to upgrade the crossing as part of the whistle cessation initiative,” NBM Railways said in a news release.
In April 2023, Saint John council approved funding to upgrade the Sherbrooke Street crossing as well as the crossing on Sand Cove Road.
The upgrades, which will cost nearly $900,000, will eliminate the need for train whistles in the residential Fundy Heights neighbourhood.
Both crossings require new gates and upgraded warning lights and signs before train whistles can be stopped.
NBM Railways said once work is done on the Sherbrooke Street crossing, whistles will continue to be used pending approval from the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.
