Questions remain surrounding safety at Gibson Falls after the deaths of two men who were pulled from the waters this week.
RCMP confirmed on Tuesday the 21-year-old and 24-year-old, who are both from India, were initially reported in medical distress on Monday afternoon.
Life-saving measures were taken on the first man, but he died at the scene. The body of the second was pulled from the river on Tuesday morning.
Elgin Fire Chief Kent Steeves says they get calls to that location at Gibson Falls on River Road at least once a year.
“It’s a deep ravine. It’s hard to get in and even harder to get out. The problem is the easiest way to get in is to jump and then you’re scaling rockside to get back out,” says Steeves.

Elgin, Petitcodiac, and Sussex fire departments were on the scene to assist with the attempted search and rescue.
Steeves says it’s a beautiful spot, but sometimes people go up there when they’re not in the right frame of mind and make poor judgements.
“We get called up here almost once a year on average. It is not unfamiliar to us. We do training there on a regular basis now because we know that we are probably going up there,” he adds.
