A volunteer-based non-profit organization focused on recreational biking in the Saint John region continues to grow.
Saint John Cycling, which usually averages about 200 members, now have more than 430 members, according to its president.
Martin Palkovic believes the increase stems from people finding ways to exercise during COVID-19, and Saint John council improving and making cycling a viable inexpensive option for transportation.
“New bicycle lanes throughout the city and the extension of Harbour Passage in the uptown area and there was an announcement recently of plans to extend that westward near Reversing Falls as well,” said Palkovic.
“It’s an indication of the growth and popularity of cycling in Saint John.”
Palkovic said the club promotes road and mountain biking, trail building and maintenance, sustainable trail access and improved road infrastructure and legislation.
Saint John Cycling members put in over 1,000 volunteers per year to maintain more than 40 kilometres of trails in Rockwood Park.
“Rockwood Park is growing as a mountain bike destination,” said Palkovic. “It’s one of the crown jewels of Saint John and we’re proud to be responsible stewards.”
