New Brunswickers must remove their ice-fishing shelters from all provincial waterways no later than Sunday, the province announced Wednesday.
“We are expecting some unseasonably mild weather in the immediate weather forecast, so it is important to be cautious and not wait until it is too late to remove ice-fishing shelters,” said Environment Minister Gary Crossman.
“Warmer temperatures can quickly lead to unpredictable and unsafe ice conditions. Owners of ice-fishing structures must keep a close eye on conditions and, if they see signs of melting, remove the shelters.”
Officials said owners are responsible for removing their structures before the deadline to avoid environmental hazards by having possible waste and debris in the province’s waterways. They must also remove all garbage and debris.
Crossman also encouraged all New Brunswickers to be responsible stewards of the environment and to report any infraction of environmental regulations.
“We do not want what is on the ice to end up in the river or lake, so please take everything with you and keep our province clean, we all want to enjoy clean water year-round,” he said.
The department said it is important to note that the winter fishing season is open until March 31.
