Police say a 44-year-old man has died after a fire tore through a tent encampment in Saint John over the weekend.
Fire crews were dispatched to the scene near Viaduct at the Route 1 westbound on-ramp just before 8 p.m. Saturday.
“The first arriving crew found the fire and asked for additional engines and tanker truck due to a shortage of water in the area,” said Platoon Chief Ed Moyer of the Saint John Fire Department.
Moyer said one man was found with serious burn injuries and transported to the Saint John Regional Hospital.
Police said the victim, who was transferred out of the province for further medical treatment, died from his injuries on Sunday. He has since been identified by police as Peter McArthur.
Moyer said several other people were treated at the scene by first responders for less serious injuries.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by police and fire officials.
