The New Brunswick government says it is still awaiting information about possible changes to the Saint John to Digby ferry.
Transport Canada says it may redeploy the MV Fundy Rose to service the route between Souris, P.E.I., and the Magdalen Islands.
The ferry that currently services the crossing, the MV Madeleine II, is scheduled for mandatory drydocking next spring.
Hicham Ayoun, a spokesperson for Transport Canada, recently told our newsroom that no final decision has been made.
New Brunswick’s transportation minister said he has yet to hear from the federal agency about its intentions.
In an email, Richard Ames said the ferry is an important interprovincial gateway and provides a vital trade and tourism link to Nova Scotia.
“The service is also of social and economic benefit to New Brunswick through employment and the transportation of goods and people,” said Ames.
Meanwhile, Ayoun acknowledged the challenges that any interruption in ferry service can pose for local communities in the Atlantic region.
He said all potential impacts will be meticulously evaluated before any final determination is made. It is unclear when that final decision will be made.
