Canada Soccer’s Women’s National team is set to create history in Halifax as they prepare to host Brazil at the Wanderers Grounds on Tuesday, October 31. This significant event, presented by CIBC, marks a remarkable return of Canada Soccer’s Senior National Teams to the Maritimes, a region that hasn’t seen such action since Canada’s Women’s National Team secured a 1-0 victory against China PR in Moncton in the spring of 2012, thanks to a goal from Canadian legend Christine Sinclair.
This monumental occasion will be the first-ever competitive match played by a Canadian National Soccer Team in Nova Scotia, and the choice of the iconic Wanderers Grounds as the venue adds an extra layer of significance. Derek Martin, president, and founder of the Wanderers, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The work we’ve done to create a stadium experience at the Wanderers Grounds is what enables us to bring such an exciting match to Halifax. I know soccer fans across the East Coast will come out in numbers and show the Canadians a rocking atmosphere to cheer them on!”
The opening match of the Canada-Brazil series will kick off at Montreal’s Stade Saputo on October 28, presented by GE Canada, marking Canada’s return to Montréal for the first time since defeating New Zealand in October of 2021 as part of Canada’s Celebration Tour following the historic Gold Medal achievement at the Tokyo Olympics.
Bev Priestman, Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team Head Coach, shared her excitement, stating, “We are excited to officially kick off our new Olympic Journey against Brazil, a team we have a rich Olympic history with. To play at home in front of our fans again, after what was a fantastic experience in September, will be the perfect stage for us to kick on and build towards Paris 2024.”
For local soccer enthusiasts, tickets to these highly anticipated matches will be available to the public starting on Saturday, October 14. Exclusive presale windows will also be offered to members of Canada Soccer’s CanadaRED membership programs and Visa cardholders.
Canada earned its spot as the fifth nation to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, joining the hosts France, Concacaf champions USA, and CONMEBOL’s top-two nations Brazil and Colombia. As reigning Olympic champions from 2021, Canada enters the competition with a rich history and high expectations.
The matchup between Canada and Brazil carries historical weight, with the two teams first facing off in 1996. Over the years, their battles have been closely contested, with Canada boasting a record of 10 wins, nine draws, and 10 losses against Brazil. Their most recent encounter took place on February 19, 2023, at the She Believes Cup, where Canada secured a 2-0 victory over Brazil, with goals coming from Vanessa Gilles and Evelyne Viens.
