A well-known Saint John music teacher and former city councillor has died.
Walter Ball passed away on Saturday at the age of 92, according to his obituary.
He is described as a musician, a teacher, and a “builder of things and communities.”
“Creative, gregarious and ever-youthful – he never acted his age. He was ever-questioning and curious; generous with his time, his knowledge and his music,” said his obituary.
Ball studied piano at the Toronto Conservatory of Music for 10 years and travelled Europe and the Soviet Union, performing and competing in international concert piano competitions.
He later returned home to Saint John to become a music teacher, where he worked with tens of thousands of students.
Bell was the creator of the Steel Band and executive director of Festival by the Sea.
He also served as a three-term city councillor, focusing on the arts and immigration.
“Walter felt strongly that the differences we have in culture and language are to be explored, respected and rejoiced,” said his obituary.
There will be no visitation or funeral for Bell. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
