At least 110 people have been forced from their homes after an apartment fire on Fredericton’s north side.
The blaze broke in a 44-unit apartment building on Clark Street, near Union Street, around 3 p.m. Thursday.
According to the Canadian Red Cross, the building contains a mix of two- and three-bedroom apartments, all of which were occupied at the time.
Spokesperson Dan Bedell said more than 70 residents were able to make their own temporary arrangements for another place to stay on Thursday.
That included staying with relatives and friends or at various hotels they booked themselves or that were arranged through insurance.
“Canadian Red Cross volunteers arranged emergency hotel lodging and meals for 20 tenants from 11 apartments, and financial aid for purchases of clothing and other essential needs for three people so far,” Bedell said in an email.
Bedell expects that number will grow as more support is arranged for tenants who were unsure if they would be able to access their apartments to retrieve clothing and other personal belongings.
Fire investigators are not expected to make a decision on that until some point on Friday.
More than a dozen tenants also received emergency assistance from a nearby church.
The Fredericton Police Force confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
There is no word yet on how the blaze started or how long the investigation may take.
