Residents in the Rothesay area have another place to play ball.
A second baseball field has opened at the Wells Recreation Park.
An official opening ceremony took place at the park on Tuesday evening.
Mayor Nancy Grant said the project has been three years in the making, but was well worth the wait.
“The land had to be prepared, the construction done, and then it seems to take forever for the grass to grow in,” Grant said in an interview.
Grant said the park has been a priority for council as the Wells area had no services when it was amalgamated with Rothesay.
It now has two baseball fields, a soccer field, tennis courts, a trail system, and a soon-to-be-completed community centre.
“As we develop new facilities and the use grows, we see how much people are enjoying it,” said Grant. “It has become, in use anyway, almost a regional park.”
The first ball field at Wells Recreation Park opened about five years ago. Grant said it has largely been taken over by the KV Girls Softball Association, which has more than 400 girls in the program.
Rothesay said the new ball field will replace the field on Scribner Crescent, which has become unsafe due to deterioration and drainage issues.
The total project cost was just north of $800,000, according to Grant, which was split between the town and the province.
