A Danish home retailer is looking to open its first New Brunswick location.
JYSK Canada is seeking to rezone a commercial building on Saint John’s west side.
The building, located at 384 Lancaster Avenue, has been vacant for several years.
Chad McCauley, project manager with JYSK Canada, says they would like to open in early spring.
“We have everything lined up as far as the building exterior and everything else, it’s just waiting for the final go,” McCauley told Saint John councillors during a public hearing on Monday.
JYSK describes itself as one of the leading and fastest-growing retailers in the world. According to its website, there are more than 3,200 stores and webshops in 48 countries, including over 60 stores in Canada.
Its products range from furniture to accessories, including mattresses, bedding, interior décor, and outdoor products.
The Saint John building that will house JYSK Canada has been sold twice over the past several years.
It first sold in 2018 when T4G Limited struck a deal with Toronto-based Nuuvera Corp. The company rezoned the property to be used as a cannabis processing facility.
However, the building was never used for cannabis processing and the owners listed it for sale in 2021, according to Brunswick Brokers, which listed the property.
City council approved the first two readings of the zoning bylaw amendment on Monday. The third and final reading could happen as soon as early September.
