New Brunswick is hosting the 2029 Canada Summer Games, but where in the province will they take place?
Saint John, Moncton and Fredericton are being considered as potential hosts, the province announced Wednesday.
Reps from the cities will meet with provincial officials and the national governing body of the Games later this month.
Tourism Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace said they will learn more about the role of a host community, as well as the selection process.
“It is exciting to begin discussions regarding the process of selecting a host community for the 2029 Games,” Scott-Wallace said in a news release.
New Brunswick first announced that it would be hosting the 2029 Canada Summer Games about 15 months ago.
The Games are a national, multi-sport competition with participation from every province and territory. They are held every two years, alternating between winter and summer.
Officials said the event is expected between 20,000 and 30,000 visitors, involving more than 4,000 participants and about 6,000 volunteers.
It will still be many more months before we find out which city will host the Games. The formal bid process begins this fall, with the host community expected to be announced in the spring of 2025.
Scott-Wallace said hosting the Games is a significant commitment with several factors for those communities to consider.
“We will want to ensure the host city has what is needed, including access to a large group of volunteers, venues that meet national standards, and adequate accommodations for participants and spectators,” she said.
New Brunswick has hosted the Games twice before: the Summer Games in Saint John in 1985 and the 2003 Winter Games in Bathurst-Campbellton.
