Dozens of volunteers have already signed up for an annual cleanup event in East Saint John.
The Marsh Creek cleanup, hosted by community-based non-profit ACAP Saint John, takes place on Saturday.
Executive director Roxanne MacKinnon said they have been holding the event for more than 20 years.
“It’s one of the first public projects that ACAP Saint John started when we first formed and it’s been a traditional cleanup every year since,” MacKinnon said in an interview.
Volunteers spend part of a Saturday each year helping to clean up the Marsh Creek watershed.
MacKinnon said Marsh Creek has been integral to ACAP Saint John and the work they have been doing over the past three decades.
“We originally noticed a need for a cleanup in the area and, as the years continue, the need is still there so it’s something that we can continuously do over and over again,” she said.
Volunteers typically collect between two and four tons of trash during the annual event.
MacKinnon said they always seem to find a treasure or two each year.
“From weird objects that you wouldn’t necessarily think would be in a stream and then typical things that we see year after year,” she said.
“Last year, we found an almost completely intact office chair.”
Around 65 volunteers had signed up as of Monday, but MacKinnon said they are always looking for more.
Organizers encourage you to register online in advance so they can have an idea of how many people to expect.
You will want to wear your rubber boots, but gloves and other items will be supplied.
Registration begins behind the Irving Oil Field House on McAllister Drive at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, with the cleanup taking place between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
