Two fires in uptown Saint John forced at least 16 people from their homes over the weekend, according to the Canadian Red Cross.
A large older house with six apartments on Waterloo Street caught fire shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday.
“Crews searched the building to ensure all people were safely evacuated and located fire in the basement,” said a tweet from the Saint John Firefighters Association.
“The fire was contained to the area of origin without spreading, and there were no reported injuries.”
Eleven adults living in the building received emergency lodging and meals from the Red Cross.
Then at around 1 p.m. Sunday, crews responded to a kitchen fire in a nine-storey apartment building on Brunswick Drive.
While the fire was contained to one unit, the Red Cross said it caused smoke or water damage to three other units.
“One male patient was transported to hospital in stable condition,” said the firefighters’ association.
According to the Canada Red Cross, the man suffered burns to his hands as a result of the fire.
Five adults from the four units received emergency support from the organization.
