A meteorite fall has been seen on radar in Maine for the first time, according to officials at NASA.
Eyewitnesses in eastern Maine and southwestern New Brunswick reported a fireball just before 1 p.m. Atlantic Time on Saturday.
The sightings were followed by reports of loud sonic booms near Calais, Maine, according to the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) division of NASA.
“Four radar sweeps record signatures consistent with falling meteorites, seen at the time and location reported by eyewitnesses,” ARES said in a post on its website.
It is believed fragments from the meteorite could have fallen between Waite, Maine, and Canoose, N.B., according to ARES.
According to the Bangor Daily News, the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum is offering a $25,000 reward for the first meteorite it receives weighing at least one kilogram.
