100 Women Who Care of Greater Saint John has made its latest donation to a local charity in the city.
The Salvation Army in Saint John has received a cheque for $26,000 from the group of generous women.
Every three months, the women hear presentations from three local charitable organizations and then vote on which one to donate to. Each woman who attends the meeting writes a cheque for $100 to the winning charity.
Tuesday night was the third time The Salvation Army presented to the group of women, but the first win. The Kennebecasis Valley Food Basket and Fresh Start Services for Women also gave presentations.
100 Women Who Care also heard from the founder of Operation Feed Saint John, which received a donation of $26,900 from the group in September.
Patrick Gordon said they feed 50 families every month by rotating through the five high-priority schools in the uptown region.
“We deliver 50 bags of food to one of the schools every month and we allow the faculty to determine who are the most vulnerable and distribute,” said Gordon.
“Each bag of our food has 50+ meals in it and it is our goal to reach 500 bags and to implement mobile food banks.”
Gordon said winning the donation from 100 Women Who Care helped the organization find its identity.
The local chapter of 100 Women Who Care has donated more than $964,000 to more than 30 charities since its inception in 2013.
Tuesday night’s meeting was the first in-person gathering for the group since before the pandemic. They have been meeting virtually every three months since early 2020.
