A Canadian flight crew is in trouble after reporting potential drugs while in the Dominican Republic.
The flight crew for a Pivot Airlines (based out of Waterloo Ont.) flight reported the possibility of drugs believed to be cocaine on the aircraft in the maintenance compartment during a chartered flight on April 5. The plane was set to leave Punta Cana and head to Toronto.
Crew members followed Transport Canada’s rules and international guidelines for reporting contraband, but were ultimately arrested by local Dominican police.
While the nine Canadians were released on bail, the local prosecutor is appealing the ruling and wanting the Canadian suspects back in the custody. Reports suggest that Parliamentary Secretary, Maninder Sidhu, went to DR to speak with local officials regarding the case.
One Indian national and another from Dominican Republic were also being interviewed as suspects in the case.
Global Affairs Canada is aware of the situation and is monitoring it.
