A New Brunswick family who immigrated to Canada from Ukraine four years ago joined a rally in downtown Moncton on Saturday to support the country amid the Russian invasion.
Nataliya Kutsuremko, her husband and children now live in Moncton.
She feels it’s important to bring more awareness to the situation in Ukraine.
“To deliver the message to the higher politics that something needs to be done, something more than just saying that we are concerned and maybe more strict measures have to be put in place.”
Kutsuremko says her husband became concerned after Russia annexed the Ukrainian region of Crimea in 2014 and he believed Russia would take further action.
“So we started to think about plan B in case this happened and unfortunately, in my most terrible dreams, I would never imagined that this would happen. But unfortunately, yeah, my husband was right when he started thinking that way,” she notes.
Kutsuremko has been keeping in touch with family and friends in Ukraine and she adds the lines of communication have mostly been open.
But she fears no one is safe in the country right now.
