Spring weight restrictions for truck traffic will go into effect on many provincial roads this weekend.
The restrictions will begin at midnight on Sunday in southern New Brunswick, according to the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.
Mark Taylor, a spokesperson for the department, said they will begin a week later on March 6 in the northern part of the province.
Taylor said the annual restrictions are important to help protect roads during the spring thaw.
“Trucks are big vehicles, of course, and they put a lot of stress on the roads. It’s very important for us to do what we can to protect them this time of year,” said Taylor.
Despite the major fluctuations in temperatures throughout the winter, Taylor said the timing for the restrictions is about the same as usual.
“Those weight restrictions will come off when we’re comfortable that the roads are in a better position, which should be around May,” he said.
Currently, the restrictions are expected to end on May 15 in the south and May 22 in the north, but those dates are dependent on weather conditions.
