After a massive snow event, Saint John typically declares overnight parking bans to allow crews to clear streets.
There are two bans that the city issues — one for the north, east and west areas of the city, the other for the south/central peninsula.
When a ban is in place, any vehicle left on the street is subject to being towed. However, as it stands, Saint John police officers are the only ones who can authorize a tow truck to hitch onto a vehicle.
During Common Council on Monday night, city staff brought forward an amendment to shift authority to bylaw enforcement officers.
“This will help ensure better street plowing outcomes while allowing police officers to focus on more pressing priorities on their part,” said Michael Hugenholtz, city commissioner for Public Works.
Currently, bylaw enforcement officers write parking tickets for vehicles left parked on the street, but have to contact police to get them towed.
After the presentation, Councillor Gerry Lowe shared his support.
“This is something I wanted to see years ago because it’s only fair for the neighbours on either side of the car that sits there, and typically when the next storm comes, usually the same car is still sitting there,” said Lowe.
Hugenholtz added that the city always seeks volunteer compliance for vehicle removal off the street, and widely announces parking bans ahead of time.
The first and second reading of the amendment was endorsed by Common Council. City staff will seek final approval at a later date.
