Work on a new 10-year immigration strategy for the City of Saint John is nearing completion.
The goal is to attract new people, enhance the newcomer experience, and retain immigrants.
In a presentation to the city’s growth committee on Tuesday, Mike Randall from Portfolio Solutions discussed recommendations, an action plan for the city’s immigration strategy, and several key goals.
“We want to create a better understanding and engagement by Saint John residents on the need and opportunities associated with immigration,” Randall told the committee.
“Create better understanding and engagement by Saint John employers on the opportunities associated with immigration.
“Better coordinate settlement services to meet all immigrant needs while eliminating unnecessary overlap and duplication,” continued Randall.
Randall added with over 50 proposed recommendations, it is key that immigration partners prioritize their actions over the next three years to build the right foundational elements that will drive ongoing immigration service improvements.
Between 2022 to 2025, the following priorities are being considered:
- Establish a one-stop-shop for immigration support services
- Targeted attraction focused campaign
- Address the adequate housing needs
- Improve credentials recognition efforts
- Develop and launch immigration matters communications campaign
- Develop and implement a family buddy program
- Enhance focus and positioning of “why Saint John” to provincial and federal partners
The next step for the strategy is to incorporate feedback and submit a revised version.
Common Council will have the opportunity to approve the strategy in April.
