Development boomed in 2021 for Saint John.
On Tuesday, the city’s growth committee heard a presentation from staff outlining development in 2021.
By year-end, the received 699 building permits, with Saint John having its second-highest building permit value in 10 years at $116.8 million.
As well, based on a five-year average, the number of building permits received was slightly lower, however, staff mentioned permits were larger in size, scope, and complexity.
“That comes through when you look at the number of units that we’ve seen an increase in at 422 for the year (2021) which is more than double of what Saint John has had within the five-year average,” said Carrie Smith, manager of customer service and operations, City of Saint John.
Smith added the number of units lost in 2021 was also much lower than in previous years.
“I think this comes down to the work that’s been done through our vacant building program, as well as a focus on redevelopment and reinvestment versus demolition.”
As well, 1,400 residential units and 18 projects were approved through the city’s planning process.
