Vandals have caused an estimated $4,000 worth of damage to the riverfront Christmas lights display in Riverview.
Mayor Andrew LeBlanc says the extensive vandalism to the “Light Up Riverview” display occurred sometime early this morning (January 6).
“Ninety percent of the trees (more than 100) had been vandalized… so wires were cut, lights were broken and there was damage to the power source.”
LeBlanc says Codiac RCMP are investigating and the town hopes to have more information soon.
He encourages anyone who saw something or who has any information about the vandalism to come forward.
The town hopes to have the lights display repaired by later next week.
In December, town council endorsed a plan to keep the riverfront lights on through to the end of Riverview Winter Carnival in February.
The municipal budget includes $65,000 to expand the program in 2022.
The town says some of those funds will now be diverted to repair the existing display.
