We could be in for our first major winter storm of 2022 later this week.
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for southern New Brunswick on Wednesday morning.
The storm is expected to impact the region from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning, according to the national weather agency.
Meteorologist Jill Maepea said current indications show southeastern regions of the province will likely get the heaviest snow.
“Areas like Moncton and Saint John definitely could see around that 15-to-20-centimetre mark,” said Maepea.
Snowfall amounts are expected to diminish as you move away from the southeast, she said.
Maepea said the St. Stephen area is only expecting around 10 to 15 centimetres of snow at this point.
“Again, it’ll depend greatly on the exact track, which right now is not particularly precise at the moment,” she said.
Strong winds, possibly gusting up to 70 kilometres per hour, could also bring blowing snow to the region.
Maepea recommended keeping an eye on the forecast as Friday approached, adding that any warnings associated with this storm would likely be issued late Thursday afternoon.
Looking ahead to next week, she said New Brunswick could see its coldest air of the winter so far.
“We are showing a really cold Arctic outbreak for next week,” said Maepea.
Overnight lows on Monday night are expected to range between -22°C and -25°C, with highs Tuesday only reaching between -15°C and -19°C.
