Residents who use the ferry between Summerville and Millidgeville will have to take the long away around after next week.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure says the Peninsula Princess ferry will end for the season on Jan. 1.
“We’re planning on having our first run of the new 2022 season on April 3,” Mark Taylor, communications manager for the department, said in an interview this week.
About 100,000 vehicles use the ferry to cross the Kennebecasis River each season, according to figures provided by Taylor.
That is about four per cent of the 2.5-million vehicles which use the entire river ferry system every year.
“Obviously it’s a ferry that’s used quite a bit, but it’s not used at the same level as the Gondola Point ferry, for example, which is the most travelled ferry in the river system,” said Taylor.
While the ferry is off its run, Taylor said it will undergo preventative maintenance to prepare for the next season.
“The Peninsula Princess is a workhorse for us because, during the peak part of the year, it not only just services the Summerville-Millidgeville run but it also services the Kennebecasis Island run,” he said.
Drivers can use the Gondola Point or Westfield ferry crossings in lieu of the Summerville-Millidgeville ferry.
