The federal Green Party has appointed an Interim Leader as the party works toward a leadership contest.
Non-binary astrophysicist Amita Kuttner becomes the first trans person to lead a federal party.
At 30-years of age, Kuttner is also the youngest party leader.
“I am honoured to have been selected to lead our party during this time of transition and renewal,” says Kuttner in a release. “I take on this responsibility fully aware of the magnitude of the challenges we are facing but convinced that we will overcome them and emerge stronger, more united and more confident about our vital role in national politics.”
“Canada needs the Green Party, and I will work tirelessly with our leadership, staff, members and supporters to ensure that the next Leader takes the reins of a party that is united around Green values and around our commitment to addressing the climate emergency, driving progress towards decolonization and promoting social justice.”
Their appointment comes following the resignation of Annamie Paul shortly after the September election.
The party formally accepted that resignation earlier this month.
Kuttner was also a candidate in the 2020 leadership race where she was eliminated after the fourth round of voting.
The party says a leadership contest will start within the next six months.
