The ongoing CUPE labour dispute came up in the provincial legislature in Fredericton Tuesday as horns blared outside from union members on the picket lines.
Interim Liberal leader Roger Melanson questioned if the state of emergency would continue even as COVID-related hospitalizations drop in the province.
“Are you going to keep the state of emergency for as long as you are premier – which will be too long – so we can get people to keep working in the health care sector?”
In his response, Premier Blaine Higgs claimed health care workers were glad to return to their jobs.
“I thank the workers that came back with such a great attitude. They came in, they did their job Mr. Speaker. They are getting our hospitals back up and running and they are indeed helping us to look after citizens.”
Higgs added how the emergency order will depend upon the course of the pandemic such as COVID-related hospitalizations in the province.
