New Brunswickers will be able to pay tribute to veterans at local outdoor ceremonies afterall.
A document from the provincial government sent to the New Brunswick Command of the Royal Canadian Legion on Wednesday, stated outdoor Remembrance Day ceremonies would be cancelled in circuit breaker zones this year.
Executive Director Jack Clayton says that was quickly rectified Thursday morning, “We have now just received word, Public health contacted me on this line to apologize and inform me a new post will be coming out, and all outside services are going to be permitted, in all areas and zones as long as COVID-19 guidelines are met.”
Clayton adds, “I would imagine that their phone lines were ringing from not only Legion members but from the public itself on why the services were being cancelled when you are permitted to go to restaurants, casinos and other places as long as the guidelines are followed.”
The province also issued a news release this morning that stated, “Remembrance Day guidelines were erroneously posted on the government website on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Remembrance Day ceremonies can proceed but must respect the current Public Health guidelines in place. A complete set of guidelines will be posted later today.”
Clayton says hearing that outdoor services were being cancelled, was very upsetting, “To me it is the biggest slap in the face that the Royal Canadian Legion and veterans could have received. November 11th is for paying tribute to our veterans, World War 1, 2 Korea, even present day, including Afghanistan, to the veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice.”
