For the uptown lunch crowd, there will soon be one less option in Saint John.
The Princess Street eatery, Ethel & Mary’s, will close at the end of the month.
Owner Matthew Elliott said after basically working himself “to the bone” for nearly two years, he decided with his partner it was time to move on.
Elliott said their loyal customers are sad to hear of the closure as their neighbours from the Saint John Theatre Company to Catapult Coffee and the Saint John Tool Library have been very supportive.
“We know everyone on the block and we see them all the time, so I think our neighbourhood is bummed because they liked being able to come here, but everyone basically understands where we’re at,” Elliott said.
Elliott said the decision to close is just a “cold, hard reality,” adding they opened three weeks before the pandemic began.
But it is not the end for Elliott as future plans are already being discussed.
“Honestly, [we are] pretty excited to see what’s next. We have a few things in the works and we are talking to a few people who want to be involved, nothing I can disclose yet but, something probably in the non-profit sector,” Elliott said.
