A group of people in St. George are trying to prevent further tragedy with a suicide awareness campaign.
Four pole banners will be displayed throughout the school year to remember four Fundy Middle & High School students who died from suicide.
The purple and teal banners in St. George remember Braden Cooke, Hillary Hooper, Cameron Matheson and Connor May.
Tony Cooke, chair of The Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Team of Charlotte County, says the families of these young people love the banners.
“I’ve had no negative feedback at all. The parents of these kids were all on board with it,” Cooke said.
Scott said he put the idea forward back in early August and the response was positive right away.
“Putting these banners up will not only give life-saving phone numbers for people to call, I believe it also tells people who are on the fence about coming to get help that their communities care about them,” Cooke said.
The six-foot banners offer mental health and suicide support phone numbers.
One of the banners will be officially dedicated in a ceremony on Tuesday in St. George across from the school.
Cooke said similar banners will also be displayed in other communities throughout the region.
