New Brunswick’s Green party leader calls the rising number of COVID-19 cases spreading to other regions “a concern”.
David Coon said the provincial government lifted restrictions way before they should have.
Coon said he appreciates the perspective of national experts who want public health measures to return while vaccination programs are running,
“Other public health measures need to be brought back into place in the meantime to complement that. That includes requiring again masking in indoor public spaces for example,” Coon said.
Coon said hitting the 75 per cent vaccination point for eligible New Brunswickers was “meaningless” without public health measures for a month.
He says it just reminded him that the Premier and his government decided to lifted restrictions a month earlier than Public Health had been recommending all along.
“And we haven’t really moved indoors yet. That is going to start to happen next week as children go back to school and as more of us go back to the office and work,” Coon said.
He noted we are in a different situation this fall with vaccinations but it doesn’t make us “bulletproof”.
Coon said lifting restrictions before reaching the 75 per cent target took the wind out of the sails of the provincial vaccination program.
