Canada has now received more than 66 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines — enough to fully vaccinate everyone who is eligible for a shot.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement during a stop in Moncton, N.B., on Tuesday morning.
“Back in the winter, I made a promise that we would have enough vaccines for all eligible Canadians by the end of September, so not only have we kept that promise, but we’ve done it two months ahead of schedule,” Trudeau told reporters.
Trudeau continued to urge Canadians aged 12 and older to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
Fully vaccinated people account for just 0.5 per cent of COVID-19 cases currently being reported, he said.
The Prime Minister sympathized with the families that have children that cannot receive a vaccine, stating “hopefully that is going to change soon.”
A father of three, Trudeau acknowledged that it was difficult to explain to his youngest son why he cannot get vaccinated.
Health Canada has not approved a COVID-19 vaccine for use in children under 12.
