The Saint John Sea Dogs will play all four of their pre-season home games in Fredericton this year.
UNB’s Aitken Centre will host the four games against Moncton, Bathurst, and Charlottetown.
The Sea Dogs were in need of a temporary location due to upcoming renovations at TD Station.
They will host Moncton on Aug. 19 and Sept. 10, Charlottetown on Aug. 25, and Bathurst on Sept. 18.
President and General Manager Trevor Georgie said they are pleased to bring these games to fans in the Fredericton region.
“We’ve been fortunate to have players from Fredericton become captains and key contributors to our success over our history,” Georgie said in a news release.
“Currently, we have two talented forwards from Fredericton, in Josh Lawrence and Peter Reynolds. There’s also a strong Sea Dogs connection to the REDS’ current roster, with Sam Dove-McFalls and Ben Gagne.”
It is not the first time they have played in Fredericton. The Sea Dogs took on Cape Breton in a single pre-season game in 2019.
Dr. Wayne Albert, dean of UNB’s Faculty of Kinesiology, said this is not only an opportunity for hockey fans but also the university and its athletics department.
“A lot of work had already gone into the REDS’ scheduled return to play, and this will allow us to test-drive some of our new procedures while, at the same time, providing hockey fans here with a taste of something they don’t get to see on a regular basis,” Albert said in the release.
There will be a reduced capacity for at least the two August games. Tickets will be sold in multiples of two and masks will be required.
Officials will reassess the situation ahead of the games in September, following any update to public health regulations and guidelines.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Aitken Centre box office and online at www.goredsgo.ca.
