To the joy of many, summer flower beds and baskets returned to the uptown of Saint John this week.
City of Saint John spokesperson Lisa Caissie said the city’s regular beautification efforts were cut last year because of revenue shortfalls linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“2020 was a unique year in that we, along with all other municipalities, had to brace for the financial shortfall caused by the pandemic. To manage finances in the most responsible way, the decision was made to reduce “discretionary” spending. The planting of flowerbeds was one of those areas,” Caisse said.
Caisse said with that behind us, Saint John residents can expect the same service standards they have seen in past years with the city’s beautification efforts.
When the annual planting was suspended temporarily last year, the City put its flowerbeds up for adoption with the adopters responsible for all costs and end-of-season clean-up.
