A new weekly outdoor farmers’ market is up and running in the Town of Quispamsis.
The Quispamsis Farmers Market at the Arts & Culture Park is the brainchild of Andrew and Isabel Ryder.
Andrew Ryder said they had a great showing from the community during their first day on Sunday.
“We had just about 1,000 people come through the gates and we had 42 vendors for the first day,” said Andrew.
The couple had been expecting 30 to 35 vendors during the launch of the market on Father’s Day.
In the hours following the inaugural market, Andrew said about 10 other vendors have already applied.
“Even with the physical distancing, we have enough room there for 80 vendors, so we’ve got plenty of space that we can still utilize,” he said.
The idea for the market came from Isabel, who has been working at farmers’ markets for the past 26 years.
Andrew said she took him to the park and commented on how beautiful the space would be for a market.
“We just looked at each other and I said ‘you know, you’re right so why don’t we give it a shot and see what they can do,'” he said.
“It was a lot of steps and work and process to get through, but it became a reality.”
The market runs on Sundays from 2 to 7 p.m. to avoid interfering with other markets in the region.
Andrew said they are still looking for a few more vendors, including those who sell honey, meats, cheese and eggs.
