Eight Saint John police officers have been recognized by their superiors for work during recent calls.
Const. Scott Gogan received a Service Recognition Award for helping to recover a high-priced, unique guitar stolen from Long and McQuade last fall.
Also given the award were Const. Jason Lohnes and Const. Mike Jackson, whose quick work during a robbery investigation led to the arrest of a suspect and charges being laid.
Four other constables — Tony Gilbert, Neal Fowler, Chris McCutcheon and Tony White — received the Team Endeavour Award for their work investigating a string of bank robberies last year which also led to charges being laid against a suspect.
Sgt. Sylvia Summerville was given the Chief’s Silver Commendation Award for helping to revive a baby born in the home of a couple in the spring of 2020.
According to our reporting from the time, officers responding to an east side home around 1 a.m. on May 15, 2020, found a baby who was not breathing or making any sounds.
Summerville assessed the situation and jumped into action, using a shoelace to tie off the umbilical cord.
She laid the baby on her forearm, cupped the face with her hand, and gave several thrusts to the back.
Summerville then massaged the lips and chest until the baby began breathing and his colour returned to normal.
The reunion also marked a chance for Summerville to see Ryker Hill and his family for the first time since the incident. Ryker was made an honorary member of the force.
