The acting mayor in St. George would like to have the job full-time.
Faith Avery has been serving in the role since 2019 when the current mayor could no longer serve due to medical reasons.
Avery also served one term as deputy mayor. She said council is not just one person making any decision.
“There’s a leader but, there’s also a lot of voices and opinions such as council [and] residents committees that goes into all the thought process,” Avery said.
Avery is thrilled to see twelve people offering as council candidates.
“It’s not just our area I’ve noticed that has an interest. I see other communities like Grand Manan and Saint Andrews have quite a few running which is fantastic to see. It really is an honour to be able to be stewards of the town,” Avery said.
Avery cites population growth and affordable housing as challenges for St. George.
She is proud of the work to straighten, repair and clean the headstones in the First Community Cemetery adding that work on that project continues this summer.
She loves working on council calling it “another extension of her”.
Avery was first elected to St. George town council in 2012 as a councillor.
