A Mount Allison Political Science Professor says municipal governments have a lot more responsibility now when compared to 40 to 50 years ago.
Geoff Martin says, “Created in the late 1960s, municipal governments didn’t have a whole lot to do. They did transportation and they did policing and fire protection, but they didn’t have a whole lot to do with social side, homelessness issue and housing.”
He says they serve a more important role now.
Martin says it’s important to elect the right people, “That means coming out and voting. Federal and provincial governments have abandoned certain things, and municipal governments have taken them on, like housing for instance. That raises the stakes in terms of the importance of municipal elections.’
New Brunswickers will go to the polls on May 10th.
Due to COVID-19 protocols, those regions in red will not be casting a ballot on the same day.
Elections NB has said results will be released once all New Brunswickers have had an opportunity to vote.
