Federal health officials warn their COVID-19 predictions are coming true.
The country’s most recent projections indicated that variants of the virus would be the main cause of the third wave Canada is dealing with.
Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam says they are seeing a rise in cases and more people are being hospitalized with the virus.
“Increasing predominance of variants of concern is the major contributing factor to these worrying trends, resulting in accelerated spread and more severe illness, including among younger, previously healthy adults,” she says.
Dr. Tam says the number of new variant cases has more than doubled over the past week.
“To date, almost 25,000 variants of concern cases have been reported across Canada,” she notes.
Dr. Tam says this reinforces that we can’t afford to give the virus an inch.
