Researchers at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax are looking further into the impact of COVID-19 on families.
A second survey from the Early Childhood Collaborative Research Centre was released recently.
Dr. Jessie-Lee McIsaac said in the first survey, many parents spoke about their struggles with guilt.
“Parents feeling guilty about working and not spending time with their family but also feeling guilty when they are spending time with their family and not meeting employment demands. This kind of sense of guilt was something we heard a lot about,” McIsaac said.
McIsaac said they were “shocked” at how many people responded.
“We had 2,200 families across the Maritimes complete the survey which in this kind of work especially in a pandemic when everyone’s lives became difficult and challenging. It was very affirming to know we were doing something that provided families with an opportunity to share their experiences,” McIsaac said.
McIsaac said the results of their research will be shared with policymakers and program designers in family-focused centres and with government.
