The search has begun for Canada’s next governor general.
An advisory group has been created to help find potential candidates to fill the vacant office.
Queen’s Privy Council president and New Brunswick MP Dominic LeBlanc will co-chair the six-person group.
Also co-chairing the group is Janice Charette, the interim clerk of the Privy Council and former High Commissioner for Canada in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
In a statement, LeBlanc said the group will work to make the best possible recommendations to the prime minister.
“Recognizing the unique nature of the situation and understanding that the position of Governor General needs to be filled on an expedited basis, the members of the Advisory Group have agreed to work quickly,” LeBlanc said in the statement.
Former governor general Julie Payette stepped down in January after a report which was critical of how she treated her staff.
Chief Justice Richard Wagner of the Supreme Court of Canada is fulfilling the duties on an interim basis.
