The frontline workers who have been keeping public transportation rolling in Atlantic Canada through COVID-19 have been recognized.
Transport Action Atlantic has conferred its 2020 John Pearce Award collectively on all the transit and motorcoach drivers in the four provinces.
“These men and women have continued to report for duty without interruption during the pandemic in order to transport essential workers to their jobs and ensure mobility within their communities,” says Transport Action Atlantic president Ted Bartlett.
“They faithfully fulfilled their daily responsibilities, and not without significant risk to their personal health and safety, despite all the precautions that had been put in place. For this reason, they were a logical choice for our 2020 award.”
Bartlett says the award came as welcome news to transit system managers throughout the region, as they continue to struggle under the burden of greatly reduced ridership revenue coupled with higher operating costs.
The annual award honours John Pearce who was a lifelong transportation advocate and a founder of the organization which preceded Transport Action Atlantic.
