The popular International Women’s Day brew Sparkölsch returns in 2021 after being launched last year as a collaboration by the women of Foghorn Brewing Company, Big Tide Brewing, Loyalist City Brewing, and Red Rover Craft Cider.
In the spirit of International Women’s Brew Day 2021 theme, #UniteCompassion, proceeds from the sale of each pint, growler fill, and bottle will go to programs supporting women in Saint John’s local communities.
“The nature of the collaboration itself kind of changed this year, more so than the project itself,” says Sarah Tippett, Marketing and Operations Manager for Foghorn Brewing Company. “Last year we were able to host a brew day with about 30 women in attendance and that just didn’t seem like the responsible choice this year, so we made the brew day much smaller.”
As a member of the United Way’s Quarter Club, Foghorn will donate its portion of the proceeds to the organization which funds programs that support survivors of domestic and intimate partner violence and mental health research.
Tippett, with Big Tide and Loyalist City Brewing Co. head brewers Wendy Papadopoulos and Alyssa Donaldson, alongside up-and-coming Big Tide brewer Becky Frauley came together to brew the beer.
“We have a fairly open space in our brew house, so we are able to keep our distance and we obviously had masks for the delivery and the distribution of the beer,” said Tippett.
She adds this year’s Sparkölsch brew, a crisp, sparkling, and lightly fruity German-style beer, will be available in more locations, which sold out last year.
Last year’s brew was primarily packaged into kegs and then distributed to restaurants and pubs. This year the lion’s share of the 800-850 litre batch was bottled, increasing its geographic reach.
Sparkölsch is being made available in tap-rooms, restaurants, and pubs across southern New Brunswick beginning Friday while supply last.
