This week’s service reductions for Maritime Bus will affect more than just the passengers according to Owner Mike Cassidy.
He says many New Brunswickers had to be apart over the holiday season, but many of the gifts to their loved ones still arrived by bus.
“People, when they found out that they couldn’t travel to visit family and friends, all that love, all that caring was packaged into boxes and they were coming into our terminals and we were shipping,” Cassidy said.
Getting parcels and other cargo from place to place plays a big role in Maritime Bus’ services each year.
“We had good parcel and freight. In fact, if you could see the Christmas gifts we had delivered two weeks before Christmas. We became Santa Claus. It was a fantastic two weeks. We didn’t have any passengers, but we played Santa Claus and elves and the adrenaline rush was there for myself and my staff, and it just showed the importance of bus service that can still connect communities and people,” Cassidy says.
Bus trips between Campbellton and Moncton and Fredericton and Edmundston are being cancelled.
Maritime Bus services between Fredericton, Saint John and Moncton will also be reduced effective January 15th.
Cassidy says his company has accumulated large losses since the pandemic began.
